The last time I left off, I talked about the events leading up to the big parade, The Edison of Lights. One of the greatest times to live in south-west Florida if you ask me.
On February 9th, the whole day is devoted to the Junior Parade. It all starts with the Junior Fun Run at 1pm, leading up to the Junior Parade at 2:30pm. The best floats, winners of the race, and the parade King and Queen are sworn in at the Awards Ceremony at 4:30pm. Games, bounce houses, and food vendors will be in abundance throughout the day.
The grand parade is on the 15th of February, and lasts all day. During the parade, the day before, and the day after, all of down town is turned in to a huge crafts fair and classic car show. The parade celebration starts at noon with the 5k run, The Edison 5k, A run for all ages that takes place every year and is seen by tens of thousands. The grand parade follows directly after and lasts well in to the night. Of course, foods, concessions, and merchandise can be purchased anywhere along the parade route, which begins in front of Fort Myers High school, my husbands Alma mater.
The parade and events that follow are something my family and I look forward to every year. Living so close to downtown Fort Myers affords us a great view of the festivities and access to all the great and wonderful events, I would not trade it for the world.
